What assessment questions should a social worker ask?
How can the social worker encourage Mrs. Lan to take part in the program?
How can the social worker demonstrate non-judgmental attitudes?
How can the social worker offer social support?
Mrs. Lan has just come to a community center. Her sister has encouraged her to come to the center to take parenting classes, because the sister has observed that Mrs. Lan uses abusive parenting techniques for the child. Mrs. Lan has followed her sister’s advice and come to the center. But she does not consider her parenting to be abusive. She has three children. The oldest is a boy aged 14. Lately he has been staying out late, has been disobedient, and is involved with a group of boys she considers bad. She is afraid that he will get involved in drugs or crime. The second child is aged 8 and a girl. Mrs. Lan recently had a third child, now 8 months old. Although married, Mrs. Lan’s husband often lives apart from the family, moving to different areas of the country to find work. This has caused great stress to Mrs. Lan who mostly raises the children by herself. She is close to her sister, but annoyed that the sister criticized her parenting methods. Her parents are deceased but she was not close to them because she had suffered serious abuse in her childhood.
