Case 1
Minh is 10 years old. He is attending 2nd grade at a charitable school. Minh has one younger sister, 4 years old. The whole family consists of 5 persons: the grandmother, the father, the mother, Minh, and his younger sister. They migrated to Ho Chi Minh City from a rural area in the Mekong Delta. They all live together in a rented house and have no relatives. However, they have some good neighbors who are also immigrants. The grandmother has been diagnosed with mental illness recently. Minh has to take care of the grandmother and his sister when the parents go to work from 5 pm until 2 am. Minh can not go to public school, because his family has no residential book in Ho Chi Minh City. In addition, the family members don’t have health insurance. Whenever they get sick, they go to a pharmacy to buy some medicine. Minh is usually hit by his father when the father drinks alcohol.
Case 2
Tinh is a 15 year-old girl. Her parents previously worked for the Volunteer Youth Force. After retiring, they came back to Ho Chi Minh City and lived with the adoptive grandfather in district 11. But after the grandfather died, they could not live there anymore and had to buy land in Cu Chi to move there. They built a cottage on that land. Two years ago, her parents borrowed money with high interest to rebuild the house. Now, they still owe 3 million VND. She was ill at a young age and had to have surgery. There is nothing valuable in her house except an old bicycle which she and her younger sister use to go to school every day. Now her entire family lives on the money that her parents earn as daily hired laborers. However, this work isn’t regular, so they face many problems in life. Her parents intended to let her drop out of school, because they cannot afford to pay for her tuition. She begs them to let her continue her studies. She loves studying and hopes to become a secretary in the future.
Case 3
Mr. and Ms. X age 24
Mr. X has recently graduated from university and begun his first professional job as an office worker. Although born in a rural village, he came with his family to HCMC when he was a child. The family (his father, mother, two younger sisters) had a difficult transition to living in HCMC. There was no steady work available for his parents, but with a lot of hard work they were able to avoid serious poverty and related problems. They have always been a close family and have continued to visit relatives back in their village. Mr. X recently married his girlfriend of two years. Mrs. X’s family was more affluent and middle class, but the relationships were much more strained. Her parents were divorced due to problems related to domestic violence and substance abuse. While Mrs. X remains close to her older sister, both of them are estranged from their parents.
Case 4
Mrs. Y age 72
Mrs. Y just recently moved to HCMC, to live with her only daughter, after living all her life in her rural village. She is suffering from several chronic illnesses including diabetes, headaches, and arthritis. Her husband passed away 10 years ago. She had two brothers but both of them died when they were in their 50s. She had been able to maintain a rural livelihood by planting a small piece of land and selling handicrafts. Furthermore, she had a strong support network among the villagers, extended relatives, and from her religion. However, increasingly as her health has been failing, she needed better access to consistent medical care and she needed someone to care for her. In HCMC she is not yet settling in well. The traffic, noise, and constant movement are very different from the serene atmosphere of her village. The modern apartment is in a high-rise so she has no access to a garden or place to take walks. While she is glad to be with her daughter and son-in-law she does not understand the lifestyle of her two adolescent grandsons.
